“Yoga in Schools Programme

1. Vision

The vision for the Yoga in Schools programme is that it will become a central component of the physical education curriculum in primary schools throughout Ireland. The programme will harness the transformational effects of Yoga practice to impact positively on the health and wellness of the primary school population of Ireland

2. Mission

‘The mission of the yoga in schools program is to raise awareness of the importance of respect for one’s physical body and mental health using the tools of Yoga based exercise, concentration techniques and education about food to foster personal responsibility in lives of everyone, especially children and other vulnerable groups. It does this through practical teaching projects, training and employment, and by making clear, helpful and understandable information available to school going children and their families at as young an age as possible.’

  1. Goals & Objectives

The Yoga in Schools Programme in 2011/2012 will is a pilot programme with the specific objective planning a national roll out starting from 2012/13.

  1. 1,000 children per week taking yoga in schools by January 2012.
  2. 3,000 children per week taking yoga in schools by September 2012

Delivery of the Programme:

The programme has two formats:
1)  An 8 week programme costing €20 per child per course.
Designed to make a positive impact on the participants in a short space of time. Includes weekly yoga classes delivered on site in school and support material to include nutritional information delivered in a non-dogmatic helpful way. The supporting information is designed to inspire rather than alienate families, particularly those with concerns regarding their weight and diet.

2) Full year programme:
This involves the school committing to a weekly class, year round. While this has not been done yet in Ireland, we expect some schools who are participating in the 8 week programme to decide to take up the offer of weekly classes at a preferential rate to be arranged with the school, to represent the commitment from both schools and ourselves to the children and their health and well-being.
