Even the difficult looking postures have variations that anyone can do. You don't have to be flexible or strong to do yoga! but that does come!

An Introduction to The Yoga Shala (Galway)

The Yoga Shala was opened in February 2005 by Laragh and David Cunningham. Our aim is to provide fun & challenging yoga classes in a comfortable yoga space. We provide classical yoga classes to suit our fellow students of yoga, in the hope that we can use this beautiful practice to enrich our daly lives .

Tuition is based on classical "Hatha Yoga Teachings" which have been around for thousands of years .

Our inspiration comes from two talented students
of Sri.T Krisnamacharya, of Mysore India. The first is Sri K. pattabi Jois, head of the 'Ashtanga Vinyasa' lineage, and second is Mr B.K.S Iyengar who's style of yoga carries his name, 'Iyengar Yoga.'

In this spirit we try to provide fun, intelligent and above all safe yoga classes. We do work strongly but with a little dedication and effort the rewards, both mentally and physically are worth the effort. Our classes are accessible to all who are willing to put in that effort
A Brief Background to Yoga

Yoga is for everyone. A prerequisite? Being able to breathe! Even difficult looking postures have very simple variations that anyone can do. You don't have to be flexible or strong to do yoga. Yoga teaches you how to enjoy living in the present moment. A natural by-product of doing yoga over a period of time is that one becomes flexible, strong, fit and healthy. Yoga gives you energy and vitality.

It corrects your posture, cures disease, clears the mind, reduces stress, it can be done anywhere, does not require any expensive equipment and it makes you feel amazing by really bringing you in touch with yourself.

Yoga has a recorded history of at least five thousand years

Hatha yoga involves the physical aspect of this ancient Indian science. Some of the elements of Hatha yoga include:

  • Aerobic conditioning
  • Isometric and isotonic muscle strengthening
  • Stretching exercises and postures (asanas)
  • Relaxation
  • Breath control
  • Concentration
  • Meditation

Yoga is literally a holistic system. The word 'yoga' means union, joining, or to link together an one whole. Feuerstein describes the yoga approach as "simplifying one's consciousness and energy to the point where we no longer experience any inner conflict and are able to live in harmony with the world".

Hatha yoga is a physical method that uses the breath to link the various parts of the body & the mind, and to allow them to behave as one functional unit.
